Desktop flashing on and off

Hi, for some odd reason this morning i turned my computer on and a bunch of virus warnings popped up. so i scheduled a full boot-time scan, it found about 19 viruses on my pc. so i thought it was ok afterwards. but now the desktop is flashing on and off so i ran advanced windows care (created a restore point before running) and found a few problems which i corrected…so now it’s still flashing on and off im not sure what i should do next.

Hi thicky,

Try the usual free adware/spyware scanners.

Ad-Aware Free
Spybot Search & Destroy
SUPERAntiSpyware Free
a-Squared Free
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Scamware/foistware removers:

RogueRemover FREE
SmitFraudFix

Download, install and update the programs. Disconnect from the internet (pull the plug) before running scans in Safe Mode if possible.

Always select the option to quarantine any malware found rather than delete it, then you will be able to restore files or registry entries wrongly identified as malware- a rare but not unknown event for any malware scanner.

If still having problems, post a HijackThis! log.

When you have finished, scan for out-of-date and insecure software using Secunia Software Inspector and update any vulnerable software: this will help to prevent future infections.

I installed and updated spybot search & destroy and Rougeremover, ran them both and restarted my pc and no flashing! I will keep updated if it begins flashing again, but for now thank you so much Freewheelinfrank i was starting to freak out! ;D

UT-OH ???

After about an hour it started flashing again :-[. so im gonna post a hijack this log:

EDIT: I have 4 system files in the virus chest. 2 of them called kernel32.dll, one called winsock.dll and the last called wsock32.dll. all in the C:\Windows\system32 folder. since theyre in the virus chest could this be causing the desktop to flash? i scanned them while they were in the chest and they said --no virus-- at the end of them after i scanned them. are they ok restore out of the chest?

thicky, Fix this item.
O21 - SSODL: okmdepgb - {3F6ECBE3-6E11-498B-B4BB-4AB947245740} - (no file)

As for this item, this could be the source of the problem why your desktop is flashing. You could fix this as well.
O21 - SSODL: axrfgvek - {E62E8802-8A2D-402B-813C-4C061C6A4147} - C:\WINDOWS\axrfgvek.dll

I googled “axrfgvek.dll” and it appears that this is associated with Trojan.Vundo according to Prevx and it’s also a polymorphic file exploit.

Kaspersky names it as Adware.Win32.Virtumonde.xae.

I hope this advice will help.

The system files in the chest are backup files- you should see them in a separate section.

You need to install HijackThis in it’s own folder. From my original link:

Create a folder where you would like the HijackThis file to reside. It is important that you download this file to its own folder as this folder will be used when HijackThis makes backups. If you run it out of a compressed file, like a zip file, instead of running it from a directory, the backups will not be made.

This entry is bad too:

O4 - HKLM..\Run: [a055748d] rundll32.exe “C:\WINDOWS\system32\wckqckib.dll”,b

As Jtaylor83 said, it looks like Vundo.

Run Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and VundoFix:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/
http://vundofix.atribune.org/

Run HijackThis! again, and if these entries are still there, tick them, close all other windows and click ‘fix’, then reboot.

Good luck!

Your Sun Java installation is out of date and insecure- this is probably what allowed the infection.

See here:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/07/remnant_java_versions_again_po.html

Secunia Software Inpector is an excellent way to check for out of date and insecure software:

http://secunia.com/software_inspector/

I checked my entire computer for programs that may have been outdated, I found a few and i updated them all. then i ran both malwarebytes (came out with about 300 problems) and vundofix (found none). Lastly i ran hijackthis and looked for all the bad entries and they were’nt there! :o im trying no to jinx myself by getting overjoyed. everything seems ok now but i’ll post again if the problems persist. but seriously in advance thank you freewheelinfrank and jtaylor83 for helping me.

Eddie
erase your post and start a new thread
have you run a avast run on boot scan?
give a clue what your problem is in the title

Eddy,

I created a new thread for you here:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=37189.0

I tried what was suggested and it stopped the flashing but now my desktop has a wallpaper but no icons or taskbar thing at the bottom… I have to do everything via Windows Task Manager.

Anyone found any answers yet?!
