All of a sudden my Avast revolving “a” ball in my Desktop Toolbar area has stopped revolving. To me, it would seem to indicate that my automatic scanning antivirus program has stopped working. Am I correct in this assumption? If so, how can I get the program restarted? To the best of my knowledge, I have no other antivirus program running that would conflict with Avast. I am using the free Home Edition of Avast along with Windows XP Home Edition. If further information is needed regarding my PC (Dell Dimension 8400 w/Pentium 4), please advise.

Check the Appearance tab of settings to see what you get…
Repair your installation: go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing. If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
Thank you TECH for your prompt reply to my quandry. It appears that my problem has somehow resolved itself with nothing more than a shutdown of my system and a reboot shortly afterwards. The “a” ball seems to be revolving again as it should be. I probably should have tried this in the first place.
