A few weeks ago i got an email that my Apple ID had been changed, after calling apple it was found to be true which I got back this week.
but now last night my work computer gave me a popup from avast saying that my details were being shared in Russia which was concerning, after a virus scan and malware scan it came up with no problems.
I have just had the same message from avast on my home computer which I thought was clean as it is realitivly new.
again there are no threats after scanning the pc.
I have already changed all passwords to Facebook and Hotmail.
is there anything else I can do to see what can fix this breach in security?
I think you have mis-read the popup from Avast that your details were being shared in Russia.
Unfortunately I don’t know how to put a screenshot up in the forum here but twice now I’ve had a popup from Avast and it reads as follows…
Avast Security Alert
Are your email account details being traded in Russia?
273 million affected by major security breach
We recommend you change your passwords,
and increase your protection.
Then in a large orange box it say
‘Increase protection’.
If you ask me this is nothing more than a scare tactic by Avast to get us to buy their product.
Yet another tactic coming on top of the SafeZone Browser fiasco which I really don’t like.
The information is wrong.
It turned out that (depending on the email service used) 95 - 99,8% of the so called stolen details is not correct.
Very likely someone hacked a couple of small companies and got names/passwords from there.
Access to email accounts only work if a user is using the same login details on multiple sites, including for their email.
None of the large(r) email providers was hacked.
Just another of the many fear mongering ads in avast!. Seriously, what the hell are marketing people doing at avast! ? : Such nonsense was used by fake AV’s and now actual security company is using it. Have you all gone mad at avast! ?
I’ve seen it on my win7 system a couple of days ago, but I don’t have my screen capture software running on that one. It is a bit of a rigmarole start capture software, use dropbox to transfer it, I had been waiting on it hitting this system.
Let’s see, besides what I posted earlier…
“273 million affected by security breach”
FALSE information.
The person claims to have 273 million login details for email accounts.
That is not the same as 273 million people.
He can have e.g. details for 10 accounts I have, 5 for Bob,7 for Essexboy etc.
“Change your passwords…”
It is a good practice to change passwords on a regular base.
Never choose a password that you already have used (no mather where or for what)
“Increase your security”
Eh, yeah right…
If I increase the security on my systems, it means that the accounts I have at sites can’t be hacked ?
What about the hack on this webboards database avast ?
Come on avast, stop with bullshit like this!
And Avast wonders why so many have left for other vendors!!! Guess since it was sold out to corporate world, all they care about is bottom line, no matter the method.
l was hoping for improvement but, alas, I am no longer holding my breath. Bye Avast. I won’t use software from a company so low as to try tricking unsuspecting users. No problem for me, but what about all the poor folks who now think something is wrong with their systems?
Not sure to what you refer the Popup add or the display in the bottom 1/4 of the avastUI. For me the latter is the way to go less intrusive. More to the point clear wording that this is an ad/offer not an indication that you have a problem. Whilst calling it an Avast Security Alert is questionable.
Snap, I don’t live in the UI with main exception of screen captures for use in the forums.
This usage of the UI to deliver ads/promotions/offers, etc. used to be the way it was some time ago. They were much less intrusive (obviously), one thing for sure they weren’t misleading/deceptive/fud as some of these popups are.
