Detection of malware - poor?

Hi malware fighters,

Consider these results:
Detection of malware between 30/11/08 - 29/12/08

* AVG - 51%
* Dr. Web - 51%
* Trend Micro - 45%
* Sophos - 44%
* ESET NOD32 - 41%
* Norman - 41%
* F-Secure - 38%
* F-Prot 37%
* McAfee - 36%
* Sunbelt - 29%
* Kaspersky - 25%
* VirusBuster - 6%

Not really reassuring,

polonus

Hi Polonus,

What is the source of the information? Where did Avast rank in the study?

Thanks again for your helpful information and tireless work.

If this test is truthfull I believe it shows us a accurate picture of how advanced Malware has gotten recently it can also show how important it is to have a layered defense (SAS, MBAM, Spyware terminator ect.) instead of just a resident AV scanner.

*EDIT: I dont see how AVG managed to get 51%…

The test results were posted here: http://security.nl/artikel/26897/1/Virusscanners_detecteren_slechts_37%25_alle_malware.html and the original source appears to be from within this site http://www.cyveillance.com/web/news/press_rel/2009/2009-02-02.asp
No reason offered for Avasts’ non-inclusion, although apparently the Symantec results were inconclusive, so not reported.

Damien,
I think these are statistics that are only as good and/or reliable as the source they come from.
They also appear to be slanted toward AVG which leads me to believe that they
may not be totally unbiased. Just my opionion. :wink:

thanks for posting these.
