Dial up only program

I am working on a Compaq laptop that is/was loaded with lots of junk. I removed Symantec and put on the progs we all recommend here including, of course, Avast!

I tried to talk her into dumping her dial up (Earthlink) for DSL (ATT here) which are about the same price, but she says her accounting program will only work with dial up. I tried explaining that her ISP only connects her to the internet, and that her program will work the same no matter how she hooks up. She, however is insistent that it only will work with dial up. Am I wrong here, are there programs that will only work with one type of internet connection?

None that I’m aware of unless we’re talking about modem specific software.
Which accounting program are you referring to Gene ?

None that I know of either Gene. As Bob says maybe there is something that is specific for dialup? I don’t think so either. She is just being stubborn it looks like.

Hi Gene J
Left field but. . . is it an accounting program or a program for managing bank/finance company accounts? Some of the latter will only connect by dial-up for security reasons.

She did not say which accounting program it was. She is in the accounting department of a local hotel (Radisson) and does some of the work at home. At work she says she uses the wireless to access the program. I will try to find out more when I talk to her tomorrow. Can you connect up wirelessly to a dial up connection?

How is dial up more secure? Doesn’t it go through the same servers?

Dial-up over the internet via an ISP is not more secure. But a dial-up connection directly to the financial institution’s modem/server is.
As I said a ‘left field’ suggestion and so maybe not relevent.
