Did a repair on AVAST and rebooted as instructed now computer does not work

AVAST FREE would not update. Got error message pop ups. did a repair though the AVAST program and was instructed to reboot. I did so but now all I get is a black screen after the WINDOWS XP screen.

I cannot shut down using the on/off button but can get to TASK Manager and shut down that way. But on restart I continue to get the black screen.

I can get to set up by pressing F1 but cannot get to RESTORE by pressing F10.

Did the repair crash my hard drive? What can I do?
Please Help.

Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)

How to reinstall:

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  3. Reboot.
