Starting next month my time limited dial-up connection will be upgraded into unlimited DSL, so avast! forum - hold on! I’ll come here for a long time! ;D
PS. I’m not an expert, but i hope so that I don’t have any problems with avast or kerio, then internet connection will be upgraded. :-\ I don’t think so! ;D But until 1st of June, i’ll be very slow with my old dial-up…
Have a fast surfing !!! I’m enjoying my ADSL and I have to tell you… you’ll be amazed how fast everything is.
@ xistenz - what are you experiences with self-built Linux-based firewall my friend ? I’ve read so many discussions about it, but no one said anything what are those experiences from the “first hand”…
If you see this topic, you can have a look at my router + firewall.
Its extremely satisfying knowing almost exactly how it works. You can add extra bits like virus scanning (clamav) etc which I believe you can’t do with a purchased router. I have it set up so that all web browsing is content filtered (dansguardian), virus-scanned (clamav) and ads are removed (adzapper). I am planning on having all POP3 mail virus scanned and implementing spam filtering (spamassassin). All this before before anything reaches my home network! :D. It also has an Intrusion Detection System (snort) and a proxy (squid). It even works as a router. ;D
If you have an old PC lying about, I would suggest that you try it out. Its the best way to learn about it.
OK thanks, I’m always amazed with your simple-but-right-to-the-point explanations. No unnecessary blabing, just straight facts. Wonderful…
Yes, I have one spare system in my home, but I bought it for my wife, so that one is out of question. I’ll see if I can find something else in next few weeks. This really sounds like highly configurable thingie… I would really like to play with setting it up. Best of all, you don’t have to spend any of your precious system resources on your main machine. You have a “wall” that blocks everything and anything that is trying to reach your central system.
It’s only… if we could just make it little bit smaller, and everything would work perfect… well, I was into computer cases modding before, so I don’t see any reason not to start again… hihihihi… I already have some crazy ideas… make something small as normal regular firewall/router or maybe little bit bigger… on that old system, we don’t need floppy, CD/DVD burner, right… we just need one CD-ROM, few fans, motherboard, processor, memory, HD, Power supply, few cables and that’s it…
I believe it could fit nicely into something much smaller than normal PC case… hmmmm…
All that’s needed is a CD-ROM to install smoothwall (unless you do it via HTTP), a small hard drive (laptop will do), power, any CPU, at least 64 MB ram and a network card. All the configuration can be done from windows.
Sounds like you could make money selling these things, Sasha! (Just send me the blueprints so I can sell them as well ;D)
Hahaha, you’re funny my friend… but, that shouldn’t be too far from reality, although I would like to make money on some other people’s great ideas…
Anyway… did you say that Linux is base of a whole project ? Unbelievable… I guess that thing should be much more secure than “normal” routers/firewalls we use everyday…
Another thing came up to my mind… just like you said… laptop… some old laptop. They sell them for as less as 60-100 dollars now. It doesn’t have to be some hi-tech machine. Something with enough memory like you mentioned, and that’s it… it’s much smaller than normal PC case, and much easier than to go into modding of some case… hmmmmmmm… hmmmmmm… my wife will go crazy… and you are the quilty one, you know that ? You started all this… what should I tell her now ? Why did you have to do this to me ? Why ? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Haha, those are good… and unbelievable clean sound (voice)… Thanks pal !
I was joking of course… I’m sure she will understand it. I will tell her: “…hunny, it’s for our own security…”, and if she still won’t understand it, I’ll tell this: “…this will protect our things… goodies… like your makeup for example. If we have that linux-thing, your makeup will not melt down… never, ever !” ;D ;D ;D I’m sure that will make her say: “…oh well, I didn’t know it’s so useful to have it… what are you waiting, go and buy it…”
You’re right, I can’t connect to my router from university. Mmmm. Maybe there is a setting to allow access from the internet. I’ll have a look when I get home.
I have to pay about 8 Eur/month ( in my currency 26 Litas per month) + fixed charge of phone. In all it’s about 12-14 eur per month. On wokrdays i can use it from 5 pm till 7 am, and in weekends all day without limited time or download limits. The speed is 256/128 kbs. Sorry for my english. ;D
