Difference between web shield and script shield

Can you explain me what is the difference between web shield and script blocking in the Pro version of Avast.

In the help file it is written that script blocking allows blocking scripts in web pages and the web shield is about scanning http streams.

Does it mean that the web shield analyses all http stream only and not script containing in web pages ?

Not really.
Web Shield analyses all traffic passing thru a HTTP connection (between your browser and an Internet server). This includes scripts embedded in HTML pages.
Script Blocker filters all scripts executed on your system. No matter if they’re coming from the web (executed by your browser), or executed directly (*.vbs, *.js) or maybe even executed from within Outlook.

So, does this mean that Web Shield fights with a firewall that blocks Active X and Javascript?

:slight_smile: I don’t understand what exactly you meant by “fight”… WebShield simply scans for malware (including malicious scripts), that’s all. One could say its methods are much much finer than in the case of e.g. a firewall that’s configured to zap all scripts.

Well, my firewall is set to block Javascript and Active X. When I activate Web Shield, pages like the NOAA weather won’t load/refresh.

Sorry I haven’t quite figured this HTML board out regarding quotes and smileys. A hint???

What firewall are you using? ZoneAlarm?

I thought you were joking - because THIS sounds exactly like a symptom of zapped scripts. :slight_smile: Normally, there’s a toolbar above the field where you’re typing that lets you select all this stuff (and more)

Well, I see it now. Last night there was an underlined link that didn’t seem to do anything. Oh! Javascript. I should have been able to figure that one out.

In the above quote, you mention " … WebShield simply scans for malware …" So are the malware definitions in a separate data file download or simply incorporated into/included in the same APS Update Vps data file? Two definitions files versus one? I would think one, but have to ask to confirm.

Not really - malware looked for by the Web Shield is the same malware the rest of avast! scans for.
