Have you tried Mozy? 
I have been backing up my files on my external hard drive and on my husband’s computer, but this one looked interesting because of course it is free and doesn’t limit the amount of space, plus automatically backing up files. I do like the automatic backup, but don’t know if I want their software installed on my computer, since I don’t know the site or how safe my information would be.
My brother uses Carbonite and has had to reinstall files a couple of times with good results, but I am cheap and don’t want to pay for a service.
