Hi, I’ve been putting off installing SP2, but with support ending on 10 Oct 06 for SP1 I think I’ll have to just close my eyes and press the button! There are so many horror stories, but maybe I’ll be lucky. I’ve read that I should disable anti-virus programs during the download and installation but I can’t find out how to disable Avast, any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Hi :
I also have been putting off installing SP2, but the "main"
"horror stories" are on downloading SP2 from the
Microsoft site, NOT from their FREE CD ( now there is a
small Shipping & Handling Charge ), which can be ordered
on their site. Best to follow the advice of "Guru" Dave
Taylor, which is available at : www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can_I_safely_upgrade_to_windows_xp_service_pack_2.html .
In a "side note" in Step "8. Restart", he talks about IF
antiVIRUS ( in general ) should be "disabled" !?
The MOST IMPORTANT point is to use reliable
antiSPYWARE program(s) to lessen the chance you have
malware; might even want to consider using rootkit-
detection program(s) or use the Rootkit Experts at
http://www.castlecops.com/f233-Rootkit_Revelations.html.
The best way to get infected is to not keep your operating system up-to-date.
If you use DSL or Cable, there shouldn’t be any problems in downloading SP2
especially if you use a download manager.
You might consider pausing webshield while downloading SP2 but, only if you plan on doing nothing else on the net
while the download is in prgogress.
Hi Spiritsongs and Bob3160. Thank you for your advice and links, just what I needed.
As someone in Shakespeare said, " Ride forth my men, pell mell,…if not to heaven…then hand in hand to hell." Hell in my case would be the BSOD. Kind regards, tuppence.
