Make a back up of your registry first, before venturing out to do this…

Disabling download is rather simple, go to
start, run… type inside bar regedit

click
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER],
[Software]
[Microsoft]
[Windows]
[CurrentVersion]
[Internet Settings]
[Zones]
[3]
search in listing for, 1803 REG_DWORD 0x000003x3
click on it, change value from 1 to 3
that means that now download is Disabled,

That’s a good way to break Windows Update as it needed to download Updates through IE.

That tip was posted April 14, 2005 way before the current malware infested Internet started to happen.
