In searching for ways to harden my windows Xp computer, I came across a registry tweak to disable the windows installer until needed. My question is does Avast 4.8 need the .msi file to be enabled for updates?
Thanks

I don’t see much point in having MSI disabled anyway. Especially i don’t recommend messing with MSI settings as they tend to get corrupted on its own too fast. As for the avast!, no, i don’t think it’s using MSI. They have their own in house installer and updater is not relying on any installer framework.
On the other hand, VC redistributables (used certainly in avast! 5 installer, probably not i avast! 4 - I’m not 100% sure) do use MSI.
Thanks RejZoR and igor for the replies. I will not disable .msi.
