Is there a hidden setting somewhere or in the registry where I can disable the fake skin (overlay) that Avast 6 uses so it will work properly with a screenreader under Windows XP?
In Avast 4 the native Windows XP dialog could be enabled, but I cannot seem to do this with Avast 6.
“Fake Skin”? I take it you mean the UI…nothing fake about it, it is the one and only interface Avast! has to offer. Disabling it would likely make it vanish (never tried), certainly wouldn’t help with any screen reader. But yeah, you cant even copy/paste from it or anything.
there should be no problems with screenreader, two exceptions:
AutoSandbox and Jaws: With an older Jaws version there is a problem with the AutoSandbox detecting the sentinel.sys driver (required for Jaws licensing) as possible candidate for the AutoSandbox. Since the user has no option to interact in that moment, it is a fatal condition. AVAST wanted to implement two things for it: Audio helpers in the AutoSandbox dialogue in avast! 7 and an option in the installer to disable the AutoSandbox in the installation process to give users of older Jaws versions a workaround at hand. This was planned for a late summer update.
SafeZone not usable for Screenreader users
When screenreader users enter the SafeZone there is no voice support anymore, since the concept of the SafeZone blocks external applications from entering it. Here it is also planned to make the SafeZone compatible with screenreaders in some late summer update.
This is what I have been told when talking to avast! support about it. I am not sure how far things developed already, but maybe some dev can give an update on it
If you are experiencing any other problems it might be the best, if you describe those problems in detail and also the screenreader version you are running.
