Disable to create Recovery Discs

Hi

I am setting up a new Toshiba laptop for a friend and as part of the security I have installed Avast anti-virus.
As the laptop has Win7 64 bit installed but the included Recovery Disc is only for Win7 32 bit, the Toshiba manual recommends, and gives instructions on how to create, Win7 64 bit Recovery Discs using the pre-installed data on the D: drive. The instructions include… ‘disable virus protection programs including any software that checks files automatically in the background.’

While I have seen other topics which suggest that it is not necessary to disable anti-virus software when installing other programs etc, I would prefer to follow the Toshiba instructions - especially as any problem with the Recovery Discs will not be known until it is too late! There will be no protection problem because the laptop will be offline while the Recovery Discs are created. Also, I would prefer not to waste DVD discs with abortive attempts to create the Recovery Discs!

I would be grateful for advice on how I can disable Avast temporarily while the Recovery Discs are created.

Offline, you can disable avast and create the recovery disks, don’t worry

Thanks Tech for confirming that I need not worry about disabling Avast while I create the Recovery Discs. However, my main concern is how I can disable Avast. What do I need to do to disable it?

For anyone interested in this, I disconnected the laptop from the internet (so no danger of infection) and I then did a right click on the Avast ‘a’ ball icon and selected ‘Stop On-Access Protection’. I also made sure that all other spyware programs etc and firewall were inactive and then ran the ‘Toshiba Recovery Media Creator’. The two discs were created by this program and it also verified the data that had been burned to disc so I am reasonably confident that all is well.
