Disabling Automatic Updates

I went through an incredibly annoying trojan incident last week but it’s all over now thanks to the ROCK STARS on this forum

What I would like to know now is, you know those little pop-ups you get from Adobe or Java or Firefox telling you a new version is available and you need to update now?

How do I disable those? I don’t want things automatically downloaded to my PC anymore without my knowledge, no matter how important they are…

You can usually disable auto-update for each given program through its options. With a 2-way firewall, you can also block programs from checking for updates.

Shunning auto-updates is one thing, just don’t be one of those people who don’t update, period. Thats always bad.

btw, your email address is showing public on the forum, you can fix that (if you wish) through your forum profile settings.

WHOOPS - thanks for that, how kind. Did I fix it?

Well I certainly don’t want to become lax on my updating, and I guess those pop-ups are the only way to be notified that there’s an update waiting, right?

All I want to do is generally block anything and everything from installing itself on my PC without my say-so - is that possible?

Yes, it is hidden now.

Well, as I said here>>

…but maybe you are looking for something different, like a HIPS or Winpatrol. HIPS come packaged with a lot of firewalls now. Comodo, Online Armor are 2 examples.
Winpatrol is a stand-alone. Both these options are good ways to exercise more control and gain more knowledge over what happens on your system.

Thank you!

Welcome, glad to help.

The folks here are AWESOME aren’t they!!!

.....Adobe or Java or Firefox....
It is important to update these programs with latest security fix....

you can use Secunia to check for programs that need to be updated bc of security risks http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/

Or you could use this

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

Then stop all auto updates from the ancillary programmes
