Disabling autorun is what everybody should do!

Hi malware fighters,

Disabling Auto-Run is something we think everyone should do, not only for security from viruses and spyware, but so you’ll never need to deal being unable able to listen to your music on your devices. For Windows XP here is a file that will do this for you, just right click this link: http://www.flashenabled.com/noauto.reg ,and “save target as” to your local file system. Then double click and restart.

Vista shows dialog regardless and it’s up to you to decide what you want to execute thats offered by autorun…

Hi RejZoR,

For example,
there are audio-cd’s that silently install software that disables audio
extraction software, or the new Star Wars dvd’s which automatically
install dvd player software. You don’t want that to happen! That is why
I made this posting. How to prevent this from happening in Vista?

polonus

As i said, Vista doesn’t run anything automatically unless you order it to do so. When you insert the dics you get dialog if you want to erun Autorun file (or commands) or to open the dics content in explorer (along with option to open content in associated program). So nothing will run automatically by default when you insert the disc.

I find autorun very usefull myself

I have had Auto-Run turned Off on XP from the go-get. I do like to know what is on a CD/DVD before it runs.
Nothing like freedom of choice

Is Autorun exactly the same as Autoplay ? I use Tweakui to disable Autoplay, but Wikipedia says Autoplay is a different feature to Autorun. I am confused.

Hi Micky77,

You should hold on to autoplay, and let go of autorun, or be like Darth-Mikey and decide it is a handy feature since Win 98 SE.

pol

Sorry Polonus, I am still confused.Lots of links seem to imply they are both the same, others say they are different.Do you know if disabling autoplay using Tweakui also disables Autorun ? Sorry if I’m sounding stupid.http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018

Hi micky77,

Good you dig into it for a better understanding of this confusing stuff, the one term is somewhat broader and system dependent than the other. Here you read all there is to say about it: http://www.cloanto.com/kb/3-162.html

polonus

Dear Polonus, thanks for your advice,it is indeed a bit confusing( not your advice ;D ).I shall try and dig deeper, and hopefully post back.Keep up the good work, its much appreciated.

Autoruns is a tool from sysinternals (now Microsoft).
For me, autorun and autoplay is the same. Maybe I’m wrong… can you post the link to Wikipedia here?

Yes,of course.I haven’t looked into this deeply, so forgive me if I am wrong. The article seems to say that to disable autorun you need to edit the registry, yet to disable autoplay you can use Tweakui. Its been a long day, will start again tomorrow.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autorun
