I just started with Avast and I’m sure I’ll have more questions, but for now I haven’t seen a way to temporarily disable the anti virus program, which can sometimes be necessary. I’d appreciate any help.

you can right click tray icon and pause shields for xxx minutes
Thanks for the info. As far as when its required, occasionally, it can interfere with a D/L. It’s rare, and you have to be careful what you’re d/l-ing, but it’s good to know how to do it. Thanks again.
I would be very careful when it comes to disabling any anti-virus.
Disabling avast greatly increases you chances of an infection. 
Don’t know what you mean by “interfere with a D/L” ?
But I would rather not download something if this interference was alerting on either the site of downloaded file, etc.
