I’ve been running Avast and Thunderbird for years with very few hitches - until recently…

Since the last Avast update, I’m now getting a ‘can’t save message’ warning whilst I type emails, and when I try and send I get: ‘There was a problem including the file file:///C:/DOCUME~1/James/LOCALS~1/Temp/nsemail.html in the message. Would you like to continue sending the message without this file?’.
I’ve attempted to clear my temp folder, didn’t work, and I’ve asked Avast not to scan outgoing mail, also didn’t work. The only thing that works is disabling Avast altogether, which due to the amount of virussy emails I’ve had coming in of late, I really don’t want to do!

Any ideas? Thanks in advance…

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
  • Which version of Thunderbird…?

Free Avast, V 10.3.2225
Windows XP, all security disabled
No other live security software
I’ve always used Avast, for 15 years+
Thunderbird 38.2.0 - I’ve been using Thunderbird for 10 years+
Thanks is advance…

Are you on SP3…?

No idea sorry! What is that/how do I find out?

See: https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB36#idt_03

Yes, SP3, build 2600…

Well, no problem here with a similar config…

Try:

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Hasn’t worked alas… Exactly as before…
