It used to be recommended to not let AV utilities scan mail programs because that sometimes causes problems. Also, I have IM disabled on my PC and therefore do not need that AV shield.
Is it possible to selectively disable one or more Avast 5 shields leaving the rest to run properly? Pros and cons?
Not sure what some of the shields do (like p2p, etc.). Explanation somewhere?
I have the P2P shield (for those using Torrents type programs for file sharing) and the IM shield disabled. I nevr use the features. You can actually remove them from consideration by going to the remove programs feature in control panel and selecting “change”. I have always scanned the incoming and outgoing mail on several computers without any problems, so don’t know who recommends not to. New feature in Avast! 5 allows you to scan encrypted mail (like Gmail) without using external support programs. Vendors who don’t have a mail shield argue it is a waste of time; users who have it seem to like scanning mail and removing malware before it is integrated into the mainstream processing and then eventually scanned.
