I was hoping that when the final release came out that my problem would have been resolved, but it hasn’t. The GUI disappears when I re-activate credit alert. After credit alert is re-activated, I can doing anything with Security or Maintenance. When I go to either of these tabs, the GUI disappears. The only way that I can resolve the issue is to uninstall and reinstall.
Same thing happened to me today. Been using the last couple of betas with no problem. Tried reactivating the CreditAlert function in avast! and had the Main GUI disappear when I click on the Maintenance or Security tabs in the main window. Essentially the avast! GUI just closes.
I tried a repair at first to see if it would rectify the problem along with several reboots - no joy . . . Still have the main GUI close whenever I click on the Maintenance or Security links in the main GUI or the Maintenance link in the settings menu. A complete uninstall and reinstall brings everything back to normal. At this point I am just going to leave well enough alone and NOT reactivate the CreditAlert function.
Besides the OP is anybody else seeing this or are we alone . . . . ??
hey are you using the latest version of avast 8.0.1483?
could you show s a picture of this disappearing GUI?
I am currently using avast 8.0.1487 (RC), HOWEVER - the same thing happened when I was using the official released versions of avast 8. I posted to this thread since the OP had experienced the exact same problem as I did.
I would love to show you a picture of “this disappearing GUI” - but it is somewhat difficult to take a picture of something that isn’t there!! ;D
I’m afraid we’d need some help as we’re currently unable to simulate the problem.
First, can you please check if the AvastUI.exe process terminates when the UI disappears? I.e. if you watch the process in Task Manager, it disappears (soon afterwards a new one appears again, but with a different process ID).
If it is so, we’d need a dump of the crashing process… so the first thing would be to check for unpXXXXX files in avast! log folder (c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log), and if there aren’t any, maybe use a tool like SysInternals procdump (I would post the exact commandline for that tool).
Thanks.
igor,
I sent you a private message with more details . . . .
Windows 7 HP SP1 x64 - Avast Free 8.0.1489
See the attached three-screenshot composite.
After months and months of “please try it again later,” imagine my suprise when today I got a successfully activated.
But clicking the OK button returned the AvastUI.exe Application Error dialogue. Upon clicking OK:
- Clicking the SECURITY tab collapsed the UI.
- Clicking on Maintenance in Settings collapsed the UI.
- Other tabs and Settings items were OK.
The only way I found to return functionality (the ability open & access) to 1 and 2 was to Restore factory defaults in Settings Troubleshooting, both items checked.
As of this point in time, even though “Enable displaying the alerts” is enabled in CreditAlert Settings, I don’t know if it’s actually working.
Using Reactivate evokes again 1 and 2 above, and again can be fixed via Restore factory…
I’ll be submitting this also to Tech Support but I thought it would be advantageous to post it up here too.
Any comments from Avast? Thanks.
I have been experiencing this problem with every release of Avast 8 since it’s initial release. I have worked with techs and the last communication with them said that they were able to duplicate the problem in house and that it would be fixed in the next release. Now Igor says that they have been unable to duplicate the problem. Either someone did not tell me the truth or Igor is out of the loop. By the way, this was weeks and weeks ago that I was told this would be fixed in the next release and I am still waiting on that to happen. Why so long for an updated release??? I am quickly losing all faith in Avast products and their tech support. I have been using their paid Internet Security Suite since version 5 but am about to move to another product unless they get their act together soon. Running out of patience. The more features Avast adds to their products, the worse they get. Time to go back to basics and quit trying to have every feature they can think of. I just want solid antivirus and a good firewall. Skip all the gimmicks please. I feel better now that I have vented. It does make me feel better now that I know I am not the only one to have this problem.
Well, my post is from the beginning of May - and as far as I know, it was the case at the time.
I believe the developers have indeed been able to reproduce and fix the problem later (after v8.0.1489 was released) - but since there hasn’t been any program update since then, it’s not released yet.
Ironically, I too am somewhat pleased I am not alone. You being a paying customer, I would be equally incensed. As a Free user, all I want to know is if the darn thing is working or not. Thanks for your detailed reply.
But I did receive a reply from support and :
Could you try this workaround with our new release:
- uninstall avast7 (and 8 if you have it) - you should use our removal utility ( http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/aswclear.exe )
- restart and delete manually both avast folders. One in Program Files and one in Program Data.
Then check if in the adapter properties in control panels → network adapter settings is not present “avast firewall NDIS filter miniport”. If yes, remove it manually please.
Then go to Windows\System32\DriverStore folder and search for aswndis*.* . If there will be anything with this delete it manually. - Turn off Windows firewall
- then clear all off-line content and cookies from your web browser and download our latest release
http://www.avast.com/download-software and install it.
After successful installation could you double click on you license file to register your copy of avast. - Turn on Windows firewall
I informed them that the issue was recognized as per this forum and asked them to close the ticket as I won’t be performing this workaround.
I found it interesting that after running the “removal utility” there would still exist avast folders, an adapter miniport driver and and any number of aswndis*.* files. And that I could possibly be running two versions of avast, 7 and 8. As well to turn off Windows firewall and then access the Internet.
The email I received said, “You can check the status of or reply to this ticket online at:(link redacted)” but it forces me to login and won’t accept my avast account credentials. I can’t even open that suport link if I first login to my dot avast dot com.
While the timely response to my ticket can be applauded, I sense your frustration at the level/quality of support, both in that venue and in this forum. And clearly there’s a disconnect between them and the developers. I’m OK (just OK) with that, tho, running the Free version. In the realm of free anti-whatever offerings, avast protection is tops IMHO.
Cheers.
@igor
Thank you for the update. Hopefully the fix will show up in a future release. In the meantime, could you please address this:
I still have no way of knowing if after a “Restore factory defaults” (which resolves UI issue) and having “Enable displaying the alerts” in CreditAlert Settings…
- Is my avast! still CreditAlert activated?
- Will I receive the alerts?
- Considering the AvastUI crash as shown in my screenshot above, has anything in my avast been compromised in any way?
Thank you!
