Disk Clean Up

Here is another one of my questions…the answer to which I am always the last to know.

I am inquiring about the Disk Clean Up. I do it every once in awhile…but I never do all the categories because I am not really sure what to delete. Some had a check beside them when I got my computer and some didn’t.
Here is a summary of what I see as of now. You can tell by the 0’s what I delete. The information of the Disk Clean Up says do it to enable more space. I have plenty of space. So do I need to delete everything, everytime I go there or just forget it?

You can generally delete more then is checked by default.

You should be able to check everything except “Compress old files” and still have your system run fine without problems. Though you should check to see if any programs use anything in those locations before you purge those files. Though those types of programs are rare, I come apon them every so often.

One of the biggest space savers is keeping System Restore in check.

If you look on the More Options tab and click the Systen Restore, Clean Up button, this will get rid of all but your last restore point.

Hello Emma, may I suggest something ?
I use a tiny little program for SAFELY deleting temporary files in one click.
The program is called Clearprog and it can be obtained here: http://www.clearprog.de

It’s German but also has an English interface and is really easy to use. You can choose what you want to clean and save the configuration.

I recommend it for quickly cleaning tempfiles.

Maybe you want to give it a try.

System Restore is a huge resource hog, if every thing is running well then periodically clean it out.

With that amount of saved space, you may find your system more responsive and less prone to fragmentation.

Fast, I went to the German site you suggested. On the download page there were 5 ClearProg downloads. Could you tell me which one would be the one you were referring to?

DavidR, I have never even clicked into the System Restore area. I am not having any trouble, so guess I will try that (maybe tomorrow ;D). These things take working up to.

There really is nothing to it, just getting rid of all the detritus, accumulated by system restore.

Progress Report:
I Cleaned up the System Restore…done…finished

I downloaded the ClearProg. But I must have forgotten to ask for Help. :frowning: Couldn’t find any directions. I cleared 1 item of IE but didn’t want to do anymore. I tried to clear something in Mozilla but it wouldn’t let me.

I went back into the Disk Clean Up area and some #'s had changed. See above in original question.

Off Line WPage doesn’t even exist as a category
Recycle…0
Remote Desktop…stayed the same
Temporary Files…changed to 0
Web client…same
Compressed…same
Catalog…same

In the menubar you choose: select > all
Then you go to plugins (the dustwiper icon) en press the + button
Then you choose “save”

Then you choose clean-up and afterwards you choose finish

If you want to clear mozilla items you need to choose your profile from “extra” > mozilla > choose profile

Afterwards choose "save " and your set to go

If you have found disk clean-up, then you are presented with two Tabs, Disk Cleanup (default) and More Options you need to click on this Tab, to see the options (see the images above).

I have rid myself of old Restore Points and a few files in the Disk Clean Up. Now to the WHY? part. (I just keep whipping this horse ;D )

Info from the Windows Help and Support Center: Disk Cleanup helps free up space on your hard drive.
From that short sentence I interpret it to mean just what it says “free up space on your hard drive”.
Now suppose one has space galore on their hard drive. I guess I look at that little fuchsia and blue circle under C…properties?? I see one tiny sliver of blue. I assume that means I have plenty of space??

I liken this to drawers, cupboards etc. in my home. I keep stuffing them with more clutter. I collect useless items and store them here, there and everywhere. But they aren’t in my way.They don’t bother me. I have plenty of space to gather more (plus an understanding husband). If I took the time to clean out all those drawers etc, I feel I would be wasting my time and fretting over nothing.

So given my set of circumstances, am I fretting over nothing when I go to to Disk Cleanup and try to clean everything in sight? Or is Cleaning Up the disk a task that will make my computer run better?

A clean workbench with tools organised, is a lot easier to work on :wink:

Or see it like a conversation by phone. It is a lot easier if there is no noice on the line.

Computers a very simple machines. They like to have things nice and clean and organized. They will perform better if this is the case.

But don’t expect to be seeing me around the Forum for many a day. I will be too busy cleaning out my drawers and closets and stuffing everything under the bed. ;D

I have found disk cleanup but there is no " more options tab". I tried attaching a picture of disk cleanup but I got a message saying. "The upload folder is full.Please try a smaller file and or contact an administrator.
