Disk Defrag / MMC wants to go online ! ??

WinXp Pro SP2 .
Firstly; If tried to Run DiskDefrag today ; MMC ( Microsoft Mnagement Console ) wanted to go online.
I allowed , and I get "Page not available off-line " within the Comp. Management window .
I’ve tinkered around with Computer management module. Checked that my profile has Admin rights/ yes.

From Help & Support :

MMC is a tool used to create, save, and open collections of administrative tools, called consoles. Consoles contain items such as snap-ins, extension snap-ins, monitor controls, tasks, wizards, and documentation required to manage many of the hardware, software, and networking components of your Windows system.

I removed Defrag from a console as it was listed as a Snap in ( which I thought may be the problem :stuck_out_tongue: )… by right clicking its Icon / selecting Author/ then from the Computer Management window menu selecting Delete.
That info. was from HELP / removing a Snap in .

Now I get a Command prompt black screen pop up for a second then dissapears each time I want to access :
Control Panel / Administrative tools/ Computer Management ???

Usually I will go to my Computer > Right click the drive, go to TOOLS and click> Disk Defrag. Have no Idea how MMC got involved with the execution of it ?
I haven’t ran Defrag for a little over a week, and have a System state backup from a week ago, but if possible I’d like to fix the setup, as restoring may upset other settings I’ve changed over the past week. ::slight_smile:
Any clues anyone. Please :-\ I’m out of my depth.

Sometimes, this behavior is due to long file names & 8+3 characters names (DOS).

MMC is involved with Disk Defrag because, in XP, Disk Defrag became a snap in of the Microsoft Manangement Console.
I can’t see the solution… I promisse I’ll think about…

Thanks Tech. It's not a Malware problem, I've scanned my system thoroughly. I have an Admistrator account, and a user acct. for myself, in the Admin group. / full priveledges Tried Running Defrag in Administrator account, and had similar response (Defrag > MMC wants to go online/ " page offline" ???) Was able to use Administrative tools & Computer Management in Administrator acct. Looks like I have to stay cool , and keep reading about MMC , and not act too hasty. Can live without Defrag for time being; but I can't rest when something is broken :P

Was able to capture this shot while writting post. ControlPanel / Services. Get the same executing Computer Management.

Are you using ProcessGuard, PrevX or any other low level monitor application?

 Perhaps you should ask the Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals
on the forums at www.aumha.net for assistance !?

No Tech, I had to uninstal a Program I won , and I’d say “IT” screwed up some system settings .
A couple of others have had problems with this tenebril “GhostSurf” .

Changed the “Open With” properties to: System32/ defrag.exe , it was wrong. Wasn’t Microsoft Management Console, which it shoild be :stuck_out_tongue: Has stopped the popup shown in the last picture.
Now I’m able to get into computer Management, but not sure as yet how to configure MMC for Defrag.
Here’s a Snap:

Thanks Spiritsongs . Haven’t seen this Forum before ? I’ll put it to them .
I’m sure this is fixable, but how is the question >:(

Abraxas, are you sure your firewall is blocking the access?

Hey Tech I was so excited, and exhausted , I found the solution ;D ;D ;D
You will love this solution  as I know your into code.
Been F***ing around reading and configuring MMC. Haven’t done anything but.
And of course had to be sooo careful not to make things even worse, as Computer has been running fine except for the Defrag tool doing nothing but CRAZY things.
Windows XP Help and Support
Went to Win XP Newsgroups , did a search . Someone had posted about same problem about defrag and contacted Microsoft in the end, and they kindly posted a fix / this:
START> RUN > CMD>
(type) regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll > ENTER.
THEN…
(type) regsvr32 dfrgui.dll >ENTER.
Both times after hitting ENTER popup saying "sucessful ".
That simple, Defrag is FIXED and working fine. I can’t believe it actually,…how could it be so simple :stuck_out_tongue: I think I’ve spent 10 hours researching . A beautiful , simple , couple of commands ;D Yes , I’m excited , and maybe in the future these commands can help someone else…

Now that you have managed to fix windows defrag, can I give you an alternative that I feel is not only much quicker but better.

Power Defragmentor - RejZoRs - eXcessive-software.eu.tt Site This is a GUI designed by RejZoR to allow for easy use of what is a command line type defrager contig.exe I think, there is a link to download the latest contig.exe file from system internals.com. Try it I don’t think you will look back.

I still use windows defrag but only for analysis to show the levels of defragmentation and run Power Defragmentor and then run the analysis again and see PW and contig.exe has done the business. There are times when I think PW and contig are faster at defraging that the analysis by windows defrag.

DavidR:

That would be something to behold ;) Shall give it a try DavidR. Thanks !

(I’m of to Defrag ; analysis shows some mighty big holes in slave drive where I’ve been burning system backups to CD )

Oh, God, just the dll registration :o
Good to know. Thanks for sharing this info Abraxas.

I think you will see some huge time savings compared to windows defrag, my C: and D: partitions are relatively quick to defrag, I only check or drfrag about once every couple of weeks to a month.

I have defraged some 1.5GB HDD partition back-up image files on my 2nd HDD, that would have taken forever in windows defrag, about 40 minutes with PW and contig.

Let's see, 1.5 gig = 20 min how much would it take to do a 250 gig HD ??? I use a program called Magic Defrag from Ashampoo. I know it's not free but it's worth every penny. :) It defragments the hard disk automatically and "invisibly" in the background. Details available HERE

P.S.
I don’t work for them or get any residuals. ;D ;D

My HDD is 120GB but it isn’t full and I was giving an instance of defragging only one very large file. But if I chose to have it nibbled at in the background how long would it take? Well that is totally irrelevant as we are talking about two entirely different methods, please lets compare apples with apples.

It isn’t possible for it to be working invisibly in the back ground whilst consuming RAM, CPU time and resources in general no matter how minimil, it still has a footprint.

Personally I would rather not have yet another program working in the background especially one defragging whilst I continue to work, but that’s just me, each to their own.

It isn't possible for it to be working invisibly in the back ground whilst consuming RAM, CPU time and resources in general no matter how minimil, it still has a footprint.
Bob, does it work when the computer is idle? (without mouse and keyboard activity)

That’s correct Tech. That’s why I said it works in the background. It steps aside for all activity and only operates when the system is idle.

I’m just glad to have a Defragmenter after what happened. :stuck_out_tongue:
Bob, with your server it makes a lot of sense to have a backround defragmenter, due to it’s size - 250 gig :o.
i’ve used Diskeeper Pro v8.0 Professional Edition for Windows(R) 4.0.100.1190 on a 40 GB machine, and it was o.k. with automatic background defragmentation. Depends on the Memory, and Cpu speed of course. If I hadn’t been able to fix " The problem" this thread is about I would’ve installed it , just as a on demand Defrag. on a Pentium 3 , described below.

DavidR, " Power Defragmentor -( RejZoRs - eXcessive-software.eu.tt Site)This is a GUI designed by RejZoR to allow for easy use of what is a command line type defrager contig.exe I think, there is a link to download the latest contig.exe file from system internals.com."
Yes It really is fantastic. ;D Put it on a 40 GB machine (NTFS file system ), and it took around 15 minutes to do the ’ PowerDefrag ’ .
Also I note it has options to defrag Folders, & files , very handy for my Son’s 15 GB Games Folder.

My personal / play around with Computer, (which had the problem) I threw together with bits and pieces I had lying around has a 6 GB HDD, and a slave 3 GB HDD. Defrags in less than a minute now. Fat32 file system , Win XP sp2 , 370 Mhz cpu, 256 RAM.

I told you it was quick ;D for me (also using fat32) there are times it would be faster than the windows defrag’s analysis. I think it is a great tool, one that really wouldn’t be so easy to use without RejZoR’s GUI front end, not to mention it’s free.
