Hi,
I noticed a marked decrease in the speed of my internet once I installed avast. I lasted a few days but too many pages were failing to load after long times. I checked using a laptop on the same router and the pages were loading fine.
I have taken the main computer to a different adsl connection and still rubbish networking ability compared to a laptop sitting beside it on the same connection.
I have uninstalled avast but the problems persist. Mostly now it will fail to load images on pages. It affects both firefox & IE. Tracert shows the route as being quick (70-80ms) but page loadings are 20-30 s then failing often.
The machine in question is a 64bit winxp pro with 4 gig of ram, 2.2GHz amd athlon processor and is running fine. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I have been trawling through my registry, startup folders, msconfig, everything! The uninstallation was supposedly succesful.
Unusual. Try running the uninstall utility. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html
Any other security software installed?
What AV was installed prior to Avast?
Was Avast installed and set to default settings? (that is, nothing changed?)
Hi,
Thanks for the rapid response. The previous software was AVG Grisoft.
Avast was installed default, local and network provider. All default settings.
I have used the cleaner provided, removed traces of avast from registry (excluding Legacy keys) and have done all the reboots. Still the problem persists
You may also have issues in removing all remnants on your AVG uninstall, try this - AVG Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.
Is this for all pages as there really shouldn’t be that kind of impact ?
You could give the URL of a couple of sites you have problems with and we could check against those.
You could try terminating the Web Shield provider and see if that makes a difference, if it does, then I would be thinking there is still a possible conflict, what that might be is the 64,000 dollar question, hopefully your answers might give a direction to look.
For me on dial-up don’t notice any noticeable slowdown on page loads, effectively the same OS XP Pro (32bit) with firefox and avast web shield enabled. I have Outpost Firewall Pro as my firewall.
This question which you omitted could also have an effect - Any other security software installed?
Hi,
I have zero firewall or any other security software.
I have uninstalled both AVG and Avast fully (or so i thought) but still pages and images won’t load. Just to reiterate I know its not my connection as I have tried laptops on the same wireless, and shifted this computer onto another site. same problem
Well outside of this you need a firewall that provides outbound protection.
If you uninstalled avast and used the uninstall utility there should be no remnants of avast, then that can’t be the problem as it can’t interact with your browsing.
As you say you have tried a laptop on that connection with no problem (did they have avast installed) or that is I think what it is you are saying. However, moving your XP 64bit system to another connection and still the same problem, what OS are the laptops using (as that it the only potential difference) ?
