Hello,

Windows XP Home Edition

You do have protection, however the program itself is rather outdated and support will end soon… and the protection will decrease rapidly.
You should update to new version 6.
And update WinXP to SP3. That is important.
Also update your browser to IE 8.
I don’t think you’ll be able to download the off-line SP3 from MS any more ??? I think it about 230 megabyte file size
What is the correct procedure to install the latest version of Avast free Home edition? I currently have version 4.8 installed. Thank you
Download the new free version (click on the blue free in my signature).
Uninstall the current 4.8 from your PC.
Reboot.
Install the downloaded version.
Reboot + register via the programs GUI (no more entering of keynumbers necessary).
You can download the installer on any other pc and transfer it via USB stick to yours. Same goes for this: WinXP SP 3 stand-alone installer.
Yes, we can! WinXP SP 3 stand-alone installer
Download the new free version (click on the blue free in my signature).
Uninstall the current 4.8 from your PC.
Reboot.
Install the downloaded version.

I take it you dont recommend installing the new 6.0 Avast version from the “Program Update” off the right click “Updating” bar from Avast 4.8 already installed?
Should I remove Avast 4.8 from Control Panel before installing the new 6.0 version?
Do i need any other uninstallation tools?
If you could please answer all three questions above thanks
(1)no
(2)yes, a clean installation of avast will be of benifit and help eliminate any problems since you are running a very outdated version of avast.
(3)no, but running ccleaner after the uninstall reboot can help clean up any leftovers.
so where should i uninstall 4.8 from? isn’t that required for a clean install of 6.0?
Download new copy first http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and save then uninstall 4.8 from remove programs and reboot, run ccleaner then install new copy.
Control Panel → Software.
Just like any other program, normal uninstall procedure.
Then reboot.
Install new version and reboot once more.
Done.
Isn’t there an uninstall tool required to remove avast 4.8 completely before installing the new 6.0 version?
Someone here said its beter to uninstall the older version from the program itself rather than Control Panel, does it matter?
Should I create a restore point before uninstalling the old avast 4.8 before removing it, would i then be able to reinstall it if i dont like or if something goes wrong with the newer version install?
Just in case, but I don’t think you’ll need it.

Uninstall tool is only needed if there is a problem removing avast, uninstall your old version via control panel/software(remove programs) as Zyndstoff and myself have already mentioned.
Have there been any issues or problems noted with avast 6.0?
What are you expecting? Of course there have been issues noted. As have with notepad.exe, adobe reader, firefox, and zillions of other programs, be they small or large, complicated or simple.
There are 125 million avast users, so there are 125 million different PC setups concerning operation system, tweaking progs, unknown malware infection, hardware issues and, and, and… I estimate that at least 98% of all problems noted have their cause in individual PC setups and not in Avast bugs.
Avast 6 is a superb program, stable and mature and as far as I can judge bug free and you will most probably encounter no problems at all.
However: update your Win XP to SP3 and the IE to version 8 first.

As stated, when updating Avast program there is usually no need for the uninstaller.
I have always found it is better to wait several weeks or months before installing any new programs and to create a restore point before the install just in case there are problems with the newer version.
If I create a restore point before removing Avast 4.8, will I be able to restore it if there are problems with the newer version?
