Do I need another security soft. apart from Avast! 5 Free to be fully protected?

Hi Alwil Team! I have a following question: I’m using beside an Avast! 5.0.418 Free AntiVirus a two more security programs: Ad-Aware Free and Outpost Firewall 2009 Free. Although they’re not conflicting each other, I’m considering whether does it make sense to use Ad-Aware Free, which is very similar in functionality to your Avast! 5 Free AntiVirus, simultaneously?

if you got outpost and avast, you should be good  no need to keep ad-aware, it’s redundant; you got anti-spyware protection from Avast.

Hi raziel. I’ve been using avast! for nine months now with only it and Windows Defender and haven’t had any problems at all. Of course a lot depends on your browsing habits, mine are pretty conservative; I only visit a handful of sites regularly and they’re pretty secure. But even the best security software’s vulnerable by itself so I would say do whatever makes you comfortable.

I would ad
Malwarebytes http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

and consider repalcing Ad-Aware with
Superantispyware http://filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/

I would also drop Ad-aware and add Hitman Pro for a second opinion scanner. You have Outpost installed so HIPS and firewall is covered.

In my signature you will find all you need for fast & safe web browsing. 8)

I like both ZoneAlarm Free & Privatefirewall, so I use one each computer.

Both work great on 64bit & 32bit.

Outpost Firewall 2009 Free drastically slows down my internet speed.

I do wish you would qualify that this is your experience and not that of every outpost firewall user which isn’t the case, certainly not mine and I have the outpost firewall pro version.

CIS (Coomodo Internet Security): Firewall, Defense+ (System Monitor) & Antivirus, I only use the first 2, I secure this way all the PCs I service, I’m a PC tech for a living and adding more protection like Ad-Aware or Crawler Spyware Terminator is good but will slow down the PC considerably, is up to you really.

@rdmaloyjr: You need to fix the hyperlink in your signature “Links to Great Free Software”. It has been hijacked to point to some mythology website. Or was this an intended misdirection?

DavidR, please note in your quote of what I said “Outpost Firewall 2009 Free drastically slows down my internet speed. :'(”

I’m not the only one experiencing the slow down, many others do with both Outpost Free & Outpost Pro. Not everyone has the slow down. Everyone should be warned.

Perhaps if you placed the same emphasis in your original post then ;D

I also have no issue with Outpost Firewall

My site has not been hijacked to point to some mythology website.

Scroll down the page till you see the links on the right-hand side of the page.

They begin with “a to Z Security Suite”.

My site is a blog, the links are meant as a convenience for anyone to find software downloads.

I do need to update some of the links.

David,

This morning I had a eye exam and got a new Rx. I ordered new safety glasses for work.

Maybe you should’ve came with me. ;D ;D ;D

I guess I didn’t scroll down far enough. I’ll have to check it out again.

Drop the Ad-Aware free. As many pointed out, this is redundancy already since Avast has Anti Spyware abilities.

What you need to add are on-demand scanners. On demand scanners do no run real time like Avast. They are basically scan and clean tools, unlike Avast that can prevent the infection, real time. On demand scanners work only if you open them.

Personally, I use Malwarebytes Anti Malware (free edition is an on demand scanner). And as a second opinion scanner if needed: SuperAntiSpyware (you need to exit the tray icon though since it is sometimes detected by the PC to be a real time engine although it doesn’t do anything). Running them one at a time, after the other, after scanning with Avast, just to make sure the PC is clean.

With that you should be fine.

I removed a content of my post, because my observations didn’t confirm.
