Hello and sorry if I’m puting this in the wrong section or if the answer is available elsewhere (I did my best to check). I’ve been using Avast Free (4.8) for more than a year. Do I need to register again to activate Avast 5 or the licence key I have for the older version will do?
P.S. I can’t check at the moment if it’ll work, because the laptop where I’ll be trying out the new version won’t have Internet connection for the next several days.
If you install the latest version of avast 5.0 free over the avast 4.8 free version it will retain the registration information and uninstall avast 4.8 before installing avasts 5.0.
As a normal dumb user of avast 4.8, i would update daily and it says program up to date…i would have never known version 5 is out…luckily my one year of registration was over and i went to www.avast.com for the second time in my life to get a key (first time i downloaded setup from softpedia.com,installed it and clicked get license key in registration box of avast,which took me to avast.com)
thus an average user has little chances of knowing new versions and updating… i hope avast can atleast notify of v5 during 4.8 update and get the benefits of v5 
People on avast 4.8 are getting pop-ups notifying them of 5.0, with over 100 million users they all can’t update at the same tome so it is a rolling update notification; some are quite annoyed about it. As I said in another post, you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
