Do I need to unload McAfee BEFORE installing Avast?

Short answer Yes.

Download the avast installation file and save it before uninstalling McAfee.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you install.

You may also need to run this tool depending on what version you had - McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.
