Just switched from AVG to avast! (I still run Windows 95, and AVG 7 is no longer being supported.) The bumf for avast! says it has an “Anti-spyware & anti-rootkit tool”. Does this mean that I no longer need to run Spybot, http://www.safer-networking.org/?

It doesn’t hurt to have a back-up to avast and Spybot S&D is one of the few anti-spyware applications that will run on win95.
antirootkit is not available in Windows 9x as far I know.
You are correct no anti-rootkit for win9x, winME.
i think you do not need spyboot. you can add gmer antirootkit or bitdefender or windows live one care antirootkit etc for protection
you are fine with avast
Did you not notice that the Original Poster is using win95, which precludes him from using all of the software you suggested ???
