Do they??

not recommended like with any other resident AV. Funny this question is coming back so often. It’s so obvious, and it’s mentioned everywhere, included in Vista security center and Seven Action Center :
I’m running both avast! & MSE on one computer with all of avast!'s shields shutdown except WebShield.
MSE doesn’t have a webshield, so I kept avast!, using only WebShield.
So far, everything is fine.
Me I would have prefer not installed the other shield instead of disabling them^_^!
I ran both together for a long while - avast as resident antivirus and MSE as resident antimalware - and I found there to be no resource conflicts at all.
I uninstalled MSE only because I didn’t consider that it was needed with avast antivirus doing good enough job. maybe things have changed since then.
wait until malware is detected and both software access it at the same time…that’s the only interesting potential conflict environment
Yes I know what you mean but no they are not set to do specifically the same thing, although that itself is arguable also. Here is an example of MSE at work -

Edit - sorry wrong link, I’ll search for the right one
Edit - I’ve attached the screenshots from the detection - MSE detects Adware that I don’t think avast bothered with. I use mbam for this kind of stuff
