Does ashmaisv.exe need to load at startup in windows 98se?

Avast 4.5 Home Edition
VPS 0447-0

Using Windows 98SE.
Firefox
OE mail

Every time I boot and then (unsure of the exact timing, probably after automatic updating) my Startup Monitor alerts me that ashmaisv.exe wants to load at startup, Allow or No? I choose allow and it asks me again after either updating or booting.

Does ashmaisv need to load on startup?

Where should this be in the registry HKCU or HKLM?
Only 1 user on this computer.

ashmaisv.exe is part of the mail provider in Avast
To be me more precise, it is the e-mail protection proxy (POP3/IMAP/SMTP).

So unless you don’t want/need it, you need to have it running.

I choose allow and it asks me again after either updating or booting.
If your startup monitor keeps track of changes in files, it is normal that it asks again after a update.

If it always ask after every reboot, check your startup monitor.

I do need it.

Do you know if it should be in the HKCU or HKLM section of the registry for win 98SE, 1 user only? Is there a way to have it load when I actually start OE and not at Boot time?

I may be mistaken but I thought it would now be an invisible process (or is that only in XP?).

Thanks for the assistance

Marc

It is only working transparantly on NT based systems. So leave it as it is, is my advise.

Marc, nothing is so invisible in XP (it at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\avast! Mail Scanner\ and value ImagePath.

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Eddy, thanks.

Technical, I will try the repair when I get home. Thanks, I’ll report back if it works.

Marc

I attempted the repair of both Avast and Staurtup Monitor.

Not sure which one worked but there is success. Avast still working great and I’m happy.

Thanks guys.

Thanks for posting Marc… It’s always good to see a solved problem.
If you can, try to come back and help the others

I’ll try. I love to help people if they’re willing to listen.

I really am going to ask one more question which looks alot like this one but I haven’t found an answer to it yet, so maybe some one else will be looking for it too.
