This has been covered many time and a forums search will reveal this.
The whole point of SSL, secure encrypted email is to keep out prying eyes, including AVs. Without a third party interface (STunnel) you can’t scan SSL content.

avast! supports firefox, it is my default browser of choice.
If however, you are talking about viewing you Gmail emails using your browser, that too uses a secure connection (https) which can’t be monitored directly. avast’s Web Shield monitors http traffic for infection.
