Does Avast 7.0.1488 exists?

Hi,

(Maybe I do not understand clearly how Avast version are numbered.
I suspect that Avast releases some updates in parallel for Avast 7 and Avast 8, but I’m not sure.)

I’m running Avast 7.0.1466 (not willing to update to Avast 8 yet)
My Avast UI offers me to update to version 7.0.1488.

Ver 8.0.1488 exists, but does ver 7.0.1488 exists (or is it a bug)?
If I update to 7.0.1488 will I keep Avast 7 or will I get an Avast 8?

If 7.0.1488 exists, I suppose that there is some benefit in updating to this version,
and I suppose that the UI and general program behavior won’t change from 7.0.1466.

Thanks for your responses.

The last Avast! 7 version is 1474 so there is no Avast! 7.0.1488. It is a UI glitch. If you click on “Update program” your Avast! will be upgraded to 8.0.1488.

It’s a bug v7.0.1488 never existed.
If you update you will probably get v8.0.1488.
x8.0.1488 has more features than v7.0.xxx
IMHO v8.0.1488 is a huge improvement over v7.0

The v8.0 GUI is a drastic change from v7.0 you can see two screenshots here.

This combination of version numbers 7.0, 8.0 and build numbers .1488, which is only associated with avast 8.0 not 7.0. It may well have something to do with the version you had 7.0.1466. This wasn’t the latest avast 7.0 version, that was 7.0.1474. So I don’t know if issues in 7.0.1466 may have been resolved in 7.0.1474.

I suspect that the update would end up as version 8.0.1488 not 7.0.1488.

Personally I would do a clean install of of avast 8.0 (this assumes you are using the free version).

  • Download the latest version of avast, 8.0.1488 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions).

    1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs, if you can’t do that (as appears to be the case) start from the next step, reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), for 7.x, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

####
You may want to backup the avastUI > Settings > Maintenance > Settings Backup if you have made many changes to the avast default settings. You can then Restore these setting to avast 8.0.1488.

Thanks for the quick responses.

What confused me was this post of someone saying he had installed 7.0.1488 (although showing an Avast 8 UI obviously)

I did not update to 7.0.1474 because I run WinXP SP3, and 7.0.1466 > 7.0.1474 update was useful for Win7 or Win8 users only.
I will end up installing Avast 8 some day however.

By the way, I applied the Avast 7 patch to make the Script Shield work with Firefox 17 (FFx 17-ESR version in my case).

Do you know what versions of Firefox the ‘Avast 8.0.1488-Script Shield’ supports?

Avast ! IS 8 but the menu is Avast! 7

So the core of your Avast is indeed Avast 8.
And you tweaked the UI to make it behave a bit like Avast 7 (even if I don’t see what menu is from Avast 7 on your screenshots).

“If you update you will probably get v8.0.1488”.

‘Probably’ is not good enough. IMO

David FYI.
I presently have v7.1474 installed still, and the GUI/Maintenance tab is now showing an update available to 7.1488 since the latest stable version of 8.1488 was released. At the same time the green pop-up with voice returned returned when auto updating VPS takes place! ( replacing the blue pop- up notification to update to spurious program version 7.1483)

Very misleading and needs fixing by Avast. This anomaly has existed for 2 months now and no official explanation whatsoever to date.

There has been a similar bug for a long time. At least since Avast 5.0… :o

See: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68611.0

The major version (6/7/8) doesn’t really mean anything - it’s just one digit shown in the UI.
The build number is the real version (bound to specific file packages etc.). So yes, build 1482 and higher are version 8, whatever the UI shows.

Yes. I know, but it’s very confusing for a some users. And also I don’t see any reason why that same bug has to be on a every Avast version (since 5.0).

It is already fixed in Avast 8 but you will notice the fix only after release of Avast 9. Stay tuned!
