Does Avast! allways run in the background?

Just downloaded Avast! home edition, made a full scan and found I few things I would not like to have on my computer…

But my question is:

Does Avast! run in the background all the time?
When I used Norton :(, I had an icon where I have like my computer clock ( dont know what its called in english)…

Just a silly question…

I guess you mean the system tray area.
Yes, avast works on background as well (it’s called “resident protection”) - and you should see avast! icon in the tray area as well - it’s a blue ball with an “a” inside.

Yes that’s what I meant, but I cant see the blue ball… that’s why I started wondering… I’m running Windows 2000 SP4, could that be the reason?

Maybe I should try to re-install?

That’s strange… if you open the task manager, do you see the ashServ.exe task running? What happens if you start the “avast! Antivirus” service manually?

And yes, you can try to reinstall or repair the installation - maybe it helps.

If you need help to get rid from Norton, just let me know… :wink:
Yes, maybe a clean install could help (unless you had desinstalled Norton from your computer a few time ago… and do not have reformated your HDD after… 8))

Why don’t you follow another way:

  1. Download avast! 4.1.289
  2. Desinstall your actual version of avast (Control Panel).
  3. Boot
  4. Use Avast Uninstall for complete desinstallation.
  5. Boot
  6. Install the downloaded 4.1.289 and see what happened.
