Does avast email protection work with Thunderbird 1.5

Does avast Home 4.7 email protection work with Thunderbird 1.5?

Sure…
It works with any number of email accounts at any POP3/SMTP email client like Thunderbird.
If you’re using an email that uses SSL connections (like GMail), you’ll need extra tools to have the email scanned by avast.
Welcome to forums.

avast will not scan (by default) any email messages coming into Thunderbird via the Thunderbird Webmail extensions (for Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail etc). The same is true if you use a third party Webmail access program like FreePops, MrPostman, YPops or Hotmail Popper.

If you use any of these and do want the mail scanned by avast just let us know.

avast! works with GMail on Thunderbird but you have to configure it manually.

First, configure Gmail on T’Bird:

Then add to the redirected ports of Mail Shield these ones: 995 to POP ports and 587 to SMTP ports.

This is how it looks:

I am sorry to disagree with the previous poster but:

Do not attempt to to set the port redirections as recommended above. Doing so will prevent you from receiving or sending GMail in Thunderbird.

It does actually prevent the receiving of email on the SSL connection - it should not but does. Even so, avast should be ignoring the SSL connection because it cannot scan the encrypted session.

On the outbound side avast cannot step aside gracefully when the session attempt to be secured with the STARTTLS command and the mail transmission fails.

No, like Alan said, you should redirect avast to the ports specified on stunnel.conf file (or any other SSL tool you’re using).

I use my Thunderbird email to receive my Gmail. Could you tell me in easy to understand terms how to set it up so that Avast scans my email from Gmail.
Thanks

i have the same question with the difference that i use thunderbird to check my hotmail account…how should i set up web mail provider so it will scan my mails from thunderbird?

You can continue in your old thread → http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=25855.0

Can somebody explain me why it actually works for me? ::slight_smile:

Well, let’s see:

  1. You might not have the Internet Mail scanner actually active.

  2. You might have unchecked the box for scanning of inbound mail in the POP tab

  3. You might have unchecked the box for scanning outbound mail in the SMTP tab

  4. You might be using STunnel to actually access your GMail (so avoiding the ports 995/587)

  5. You might be receiving your GMail in Thunderbird using the Thunderbird GMail extension (which does not use the ports 995/587).

I think that is enough speculation for the moment.

i just though that this is a more related topic to my problem… the problem solved though…
