Does Avast! free home adition hav ads ?

I have a question and I hope it gets answered. Does Avast! Free Home edition have any ads in it ? Also if not will the new version of Avast! 5 free antivirus have any ads ? Also does it have a firewall even a basic lightweight one will do ? Please ?

Hi Alvasi, welcome to the forum

  1. No ads, (presume you mean advertisements, rather than alternate data streams.) but there is a small advert at the bottom of the provider window prompting an upgrade to the pro version. Totally unobtrusive.
  2. Don’t know, but if so I would think it would be similar to the ad in 4.8
  3. Not the free version, but there will be a suite that includes a firewall.

Which is your browser? There are anti-ads for browser (as plugins).

ALVASI has a good question. During the initial use of AVAST, I got a pop-up that said something about the number of users (I think) of AVAST. Is this like a newsfeed or what? If so, can I turn it off?

The pop-up you saw was the iNews update for notable avast events, this one relates to the 100 Millionth avast registration.

There are no pop-up ads in avast, there is a banner at the bottom of the On Access Scanner window promoting the Pro version, but you only see that when you open the on access screen in the free version.

I don’t know what the policy will be in the free version of 5.0, presumably something low key.

Yup… Avast doesn’t have those ads. Even the one mentioned by David is not even annoying. It is just there. At least a beacon to tell us that if we want more than just the free version, there is a full product with all the options, bells and whistles, like the Pro waiting for us for the taking.

It has 1 ad but it doesn’t do anything it just tells you to upgrade to the pro version.

Sounds like it is reminding you that your versions registration is about to expire (after 14 months or at the end of a 60 day trial) and need to re-register (or upgrade to the pro version) and get another Home registration key.

Actually, no, it goes back quite a ways now, possibly to the beginning of 4.8 home version. I get the ad too with the interface open, and my updates “anniversary” is sometime next summer, I think in June. Easy enough to check for sure when it started, you might remember there was a major thread about it at the time.

So, if you had Avast before the change then you will never see the ad correct? I ask because no believed me at dslreports security forum when I mentioned that Avast has an ad. The Avast users that post there do not see an ad. So, the ad is only there for newer users? (To me the Avast ad is more irritating than the Avira one because the Avira one is there only for a few seconds right after updating but the Avast one is there constantly and forever and the fact that it is smaller than Avira’s makes no difference to me in terms of irritation level). If I have to see an ad, I prefer Avira’s because it is gone in a couple of seconds.

Mele20, can you please post a screenshot of the ad you are constantly seeing?
I have never seen what you describe.

I don’t know what it is that you speak of so a small screen shot of it would be most helpful ?

avast does have a small notification window bottom right (see image) when the VPS signatures have been updated, but this most certainly isn’t an advert. There will be other occasions when a similar sized pop-up is used, but not for advertising purposes.

If your version of avast’s license/registration is about to expire you will get a periodic reminder to update/register, etc. (see image 2)from 21 days before expiry, as soon as you re-register and enter the new key.
