Hello people! I don’t know but I’m reallllllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyy sick and tired of Windows and all the problems that come along with it, namely viruses. I have had a problem with them for a long time now and I have found avast to be a great antivirus, thumbs-up!!! However I’m having problems with using avast on a multi user windows installation. It works just fine on one of the accounts but I has a problem in the other two. It gives out an error saying “unable to load baseIni… (something like that) and check INI, or resintall again”. What do you guys make of it? I have tried to reinstall it but it still has the same problem.

You could start with some information.
What Operating System are you using ?
How many users and are they limited account users or do they have administrator rights ?

Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning or Error sections, this should contain information on errors/warnings, if you can post the full info about this error message.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
If so don’t do anything else until you give is the information about it.

I would suggest uninstall and run the uninstall utility also then reinstall from ‘the administrator’ account not just one with admin rights.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD. Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot install avast from the administrator account, reboot.

I’m using Windows XP, there are three users all with Admin Rights, another thing that I have to mention is I think I’ve got a virus that disables registry edit, the task manager, etc.
Yes I did have another AV, it was Symantec Corporate Edition, and I used the normal Add/Remove procedure.

Sorry if it’s too much

Oh yes, another thing would be I will try the uninstall/install you just mentioned above after I see what you have to say about the above post.

The strange thing I see is that it is reporting a folder as invalid, “C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4” now that is really strange and not something I have come across before.

Did you install avast in the default location that is being reported “C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4” or elsewhere ?
Are there any accented characters in the path ?

The other thing in the error reports is the error number 00000005 = Access is denied. This may well be correct because of the applications protecting some areas/files.

I think an uninstall, reboot and run the uninstall utility, reboot to completely remove avast and when you reinstall it allow it to be set-up in the default location.

Ok I’ll try it and will post back probably tomorrow cause it’s 1:29 AM here and I need to sleep, but thanks a whole bunch DavidR ;D

O another thing though the uninstall utility’s download link is broken I think. The page loads for your link but I can’t download the application.

No problem, welcome to the forums.

The link works for me and the download too, if you right click on the aswClear.exe text and select save file as (or save link as) depending on your browser that should allow you to download it.

Tomorrow.

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.
