Hi!
I recently read http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms10-aug.mspx … I am wondering if the free version of the latest and updated Avast AV is enough to prevent this exploit for an old, updated Windows 2000 SP4 machine?
Thank you in advance.

don’t wonder anymore, an out of band patch is out tomorrow ;D

edit: okay, I see now that’s you’re on Win2000, you won’t get any patch, so I have no idea if Avast protects against that

I’m not quite sure, but it seems “LNK:Runner” is the detect-name of the exploit.
See here:
http://www.avast.com/virus-monitor
http://www.avast.com/virus-update-history-2010
According to this, detections of LNK:Runner are added at July 16 (just after this exploit found), and now it reaches the top of virus-monitor graph.
