Does one need to scan outgoing mail?

Hi ,
I’m new to the forum and must at the outset say that am extremely satisfied with Avast 4.7 Home which I d/l ed and installed without difficulty.Automatic updates are working like a charm.
In my Mail settings I have allowed scanning all incoming mail (no certification)but not outgoing mail.Similarly in the NNTP settings I have allowed scanning incoming but not outgoing.Am I doing correctly? Using TB 1.5.08(view/send as plain text ) and 40tude dialog as newsreader(text only).
When I view webmail using FF 2.0 is the “webshield” coming into play?
In that case could I do away with Mail scanning altogether?
TIA
Jaycee

Yes, if the traffic is done by HTTP. No, if it is from HTTPS.

The mail scanner is for pop3/smtp mail clients (outlook express, thunderbird, MS Outlook, etc.) and not for webmail (browser).

Scanning the outbound is a ‘service’ for a clean Internet and for your friends
