Does the new mail scanner support SSL (TLS) connections?

After switching ISPs I found that my new ISP requires an SSL connection for mail. The production version of Avast! says that it does not support such connections.

I installed the 4.5 beta, but could not get this to work with my Thunderbird email client - it just hangs on a send.

Maybe 4.5 does not support SSL either in which case I guess I have to give up on Avast! :-\

However, if it does support SSL then I will keep trying to make it work.

Thanks,

Don.

DT, I’m afraid 4.5 still does not support SSL
Can you hold for a while and wait for a final word from Alwil team? :-[

I will wait a while for Alwil’s plans. I will also check with my ISP to see if they might let me use a non-SSL/TSL-based account.

FWIW. The ISP is Bell Sympatico which is Canada’s largest ISP so quite a few customers would be cut off from Avast!

Thanks.

Don.

Did you search for ‘Bell’ and ‘Sympatico’ in the boards?
I think I’ve read this ISP before here… but I’m not sure, I’ve being reading a lot here ;D

Hi DT,

no the avast mail scanner does not, even in v4.5, support SSL.
But AFAIK Bell Sympatico does accept non-SSL connections. Please don’t confuse SSL connections with authenticated (but not encrypted) ones.

Thanks

Vlk:

No, it really is SSL/TSL. Apparantly, Bell Sympatico “outsourced” their email service to Microsoft MSN and they forced this requirement. They also block port 25 so I cannot use an alternate mail server >:(

I think that I am going to switch ISPs - again!

Is there a technical difficulty/impossibility in supporting SSL? I notie that NAV users are also complaining about Sympatico requiring this. Maybe it is a way for Sympatico to generate business for their own AV service.

Thanks,

Don.

Most probably nowadays ;D

Nice program, but useless for me without TLS/SSL support…
