Does turning off web rep prevent malicious site detection?

Hi,

I just wanted to know if turning off Avast Web Rep will interfere with Avast stopping me from going to malicious sites? I still want Avast to block bad sites.

I use Chrome most of the time and AvastWebRep keeps crashing. When I try to shut down my computer with chrome still open, the shutdown process just hangs there because AvastWebRep has crashed and chrome is trying to resolve it. So I have to then cancel the shutdown, turn off chrome, and then start the shut down again. Or I have to force shut down which causes chrome to lose my open windows. Either way its very annoying. I’ve tried to re-install the latest avast and it doesn’t help.

On top of that I don’t really even use the WebRep displayed.

Thanks

Yes you can disable WebRep and still be protected, Webrep only gives reputation ratings.

As long as the browser protection module remains installed to provide the phishing protection then you are fine to disable WebRep.

If you look in the avast settings, webrep & antiphishing, it is also used in the anti-phishing and I don’t know if the anti-phishing requires the webrep to function.

From what I’ve read in the past they are not inter-connected. IOW you can have the phishing filter and not have WebRep enabled.

Yes but as craigb seems to be saying you must leave Browser Integration installed and remove WebRep checkmark from the WebRep and Antiphishing tab, to only remove WebRep.

As far as I know you need to have “browser integration” installed for WebRep and the Ad Blocker along with the phishing filter.
Yes, you need to have the browser integration installed for the phishing filter.

I tried what I wrote above

As soon as I opened IE that pop up on the bottom comes up wanting to activate WebRep, so I just went back and uninstalled Security Plugin from Browser Integration. I am going to leave like this until next program version and try WebRep again then. slybo

All IE is asking is if you want WebRep enabled or disabled.

Yes I guess I know that but I want to be sure there is no sign of it since it has given me problems and do not feel like the phishing is that big of deal, and I am going to try again when new program version comes out which should be soon. But thanks for all the help after this afternoon I know a lot more about this subject, thanks slybo
