Donations

What are forum members feelings regarding donations to alwil for the home edition of Avast?.Ive always liked avast as it is just a great piece of software, however ive never wanted to purchase the pro ,because for the home user ,the free version is more than adequate for my needs, and much better (imo than the free avg or antivir. That said i feel that if i could donate something to help continue development …then i would.I have donated to various software vendors over the years for software that i appreciate…such as fastone image viewer, donation coder software etc. They have a donation page where those that appreciate the software but maybe dont want a full licence can contribute something.Im not sure if this has been discussed before ,but i would be intrested in members views and also alwils view on it.

It has been discussed before so I would suggest a forum search for avast donations and you might find it, but if I remember rightly it was Alwil that said they didn’t want to go down that route.

It was also suggested a cheaper home version and from that I believe has come the avast! Pro Family Pack, which is very reasonably priced and has a good number of licenses for all home systems, http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-professional-family-pack.html.

They never get this road of donations…
Maybe they’re happy with the support and beta tests of the forum.
Although, I can’t understand why do they don’t enter in such road…

which is very reasonably priced

It still came out at £29.69 which is not reasonably priced- it’s absurdly overpriced and uncompetitive.

For the avast Pro Family Pack, version and 10 licenses I think it is reasonable, especially if you consider how much 10 licenses for the Pro version would cost normally.

What family has 10 PC’s to protect? ???

It doesn’t have to be 10, 2, 3, 5, whatever number it is cheaper than buying the normal Pro version. If you feel it isn’t reasonably priced as you do use the free version as you no doubt do.

It may be cheaper than buying two or three pro versions, but it’s still £10* more expensive than Kaspersky for the three-PC version, which is a more reasonable number of PC’s to find in a home. And as you say, there’s absolutely no incentive to buy it with the home version available free.

The home version needs to be reasonably priced so that users like miscreant can support the product by buying it: about £10 to £15 in the UK. Who is going to buy avast! Pro and support the product when AntiVir is half the price, AVG has a two year licence for the same price, and even Kaspersky is cheaper?

EDIT: Actually £20 cheaper on Amazon.

That’s right, for many the biggest competition to the avast Pro version is avast Home version and not other commercial AV options ;D

I can see the merit in a low cost Home version of avast, but what about those who couldn’t afford eve that regular annual expense added to their other expenses. I’m sure Alwil don’t want to lose the free option completely, so that would effectively be three versions, avast free, avast home (single or multiple license) and avast Pro.

Given that there is already the avast Family Pro Pack that would effectively be 4 versions of what is essentially the same program, getting more like Vista by the day if that were the case ;D

avast! could keep the free version and just have a cheap home version so home users could support the product.

If avast! sold for £10 I’d buy a licence tomorrow just to support the product.

I think you support it by giving your time here on the forums, worth more than £10 a year ;D

It is not so much about the price of avast pro (although as you say there are better deals about with other avs),its the fact that i dont consider pushbutton updates ,scheduled scans, and script blocker enough of a reason to change from the home edition to subscription at that price level. However i would gladly donate a reasonable amount for the home edition.I guess avast has made the free version so attractive that its difficult to warrant subscription to the pro for many users.Thats all well and good but i really cant understand why alwil wouldnt want to generate extra income by having folks such as myself donate a reasonable amount to show appreciation for alwils generosity.Im sure many would donate ,who like me feel they dont need the pro ,but want to show appreciation.

I would too.Perhaps having some sort of registration where your name showed in “about” might be possible?.Xananews does this ,and although its free its nice to donate and have a registration.m

10 punds, euros??
You’ve got avira for 19.95€ and 3 years 45.95€.
I think, and i told a lot of times ago, AVIRA is so expensive.
Family pack is for 10 pc’s. Well, how many people have got 10 PC’s?
It semms a cyber cafe at home
In my home there are two PC’s, mine and my brother’s PC. We can own 4 pc’s everyone, and purchase a family pack. Well, we have an express coffee machine. We can invite our friends and offer them free internet and pay for coffees :stuck_out_tongue:
You can compare NOD, KAV, AVIRA.
I’m sorry but they have got best detection and deletion rate and are more expensive.

Of course, i thank a lot free version.

Fully agree with Frank.

I don’t like this distribution scheme… seems complicated: features available, effectiveness, marketing… well, I don’t like it.

Indeed… I suggest rethinking the package scheme.
