I have just updated my avast 4 to avast 4.5 home edition. I had to delete the program because with avast 4.5 home edition i cannot download programs anymore by IExplore.
Does any body recognise this problem?
I am using Windows 2000

Avast does not block downloads in any way by default. Check the settings and check your firewall, adware blockers etc.

the strange thing is, is that after deleting the program i can download, but after installing i cant download anymore. I get a time out problem

I am having the exact same problem and I can verify that it is avast! that’s preventing downloads. Windows media player will not buffer and download managers such as Getright will not work either. I’ve been working on this all weekend long thinking it was a firewall problem also but I’ve just disovered after about six restores and numerous installs/removals of various programs and even removing the IE index.dat and starting from scratch that it’s the latest update to avast! that’s causing this. avast! has to be removed to download, even when disabled it still blocks downloads.
Windows XP Pro / Service Pack 2
IE 6.0.29
avast! version 4.5 Home Edition
build 4.5.523/vps file version 0447-1

Is the problem solved if you install 4.5.529?
system
8
It won’t update to 9, stays at 3 when I try.
I also want to add that I am spyware free which was my very first thought when this problem started.
My stepson’s PC has the same updates and he’s having no problems. We’re networked together on a hub with cable. We’re both using microsoft’s firewall that came with service pack 2. I’ve tried enabling/disabling but that doesn’t solve the problem. I can’t figure out what I have on my computer that’s not on his that’s conflicting with avast!
I’m using default settings.
I’ve got to leave for work now and won’t be able to give you any further details until late tonight/tomorrow. TIA for the help.

I didn’t know 4.5.529 was a beta and needed to be manually installed. I updated and downloads still do not work
I let a download window sit until it timed out and I got an “avast!: Connection timeout” window popped open with the following message:
Internet connection timeout elapsed. Continue waiting?
[Server: ‘207.44.97.25’, Port:100]
Thought maybe this might help with another suggestion to try.

port 100/tcp [unauthorized use] url=http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers[/url]
What is making your system using port 100?
Are you using a proxy server?
system

I need glasses, it’s port 110. No proxy server. I get this error when checking email. 7 messages available but avast won’t let me receive them.

When I saw you say port 100 my eyes went :
Is the mail provider set to normal?
Anything in Avast’s log file? (aswMaiSv.log)
What do you have under “[MailScanner]” in Avast4.ini?

What happens if you remove “mail.ptdprolog.net” from the line
DefaultPopServer=mail.ptdprolog.net
are you able to receive mail than?
If not restore the line ofcourse.
Eddy
17
We won’t give up
Under the section [MailScanner]
add a line saying :
AutoRedirect=0
So that it looks like
[MailScanner]
AutoRedirect=0
Try to receive mail again.
If it fails leave the line there for now and first run ashPopWz.exe from the Avast folder.
Try to receive the mail again.
If it still fails remove
AutoRedirect=0

haven’t tried any of the suggestions, because i had been busy working. I wont have time until next weekend. So I will start trying the options then. I hope that in the mean time limelite will be able to solve his problem, so that i can solve mine to.
thanks anyway.

Sorry, I already gave up in frustration and installed a competitior’s program. I’m hoping by the next major update this issue is cleared up. I ran out of patience and time to keep installing/reboot, uninstall/reboot, download, reinstall/reboot, edit/reboot over and over and over again. I’ve been dealing with this since last Friday and I’m done messing with it.
Thanks for the help though, Eddy.

Sorry to hear that limelite.
The as you call it “unintstall/reboot/install” and ofcourse the changes in between them sure would tell me (us) more and are definatly helping to find a solution/bug fix. But if you decide not to continue with it (which is your decission and I respect ofcourse) than it is your choice.
Personally I am convinced that it will be solved very soon. And I hope you will get back to using Avast. My personall opinion is that the people from Alwil deserve it. Looking at the way they deal with problems, the way they give support to the users and such.
Anyway, I would say… Stick around here and keep following the developments.
hddboer,
I am just like you just a user of Avast. But when the 4.5 beta cam out I had a problem with the mail when Opera was used. Sofar I was the only one who reported the problem (as far as I know) but Alwil solved it with a little help (testing/trying things) from my site. Same goes for the way Avast dealed with RAR archives. Again it was me who discovered it and tested/tried. So I am pretty sure that your problem will be solved too. Just have faith and patience.
Off-topic, but I can imagin what it is to have a product and give support/try to solve all issues for lots of people. (refering to the HijackThis analyzer I created) It’s not easy and takes a lot of time/effort, but I never give up and nor wil Alwil, that I know for sure
