Which avast! .exe file do we use when a download manager is finshed downloading a file and will scan for viruses? Are there any parameters needed?

Well, usually we use ashQuick.exe for download managers 
You must “show” your Download program to use this file when the download is finished.
The full path, assuming that you installed avast in the default folder is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe any parameters required is entirely dependent on the download manager.
Thank you for your help. That is the one that I picked (as my second choice) that seemed to work. I will continue to use ashQuick.exe with ‘Fresh Download’ from ‘Fresh Devices’ (http://www.freshdevices.com/).
I used fresh download some time ago and it worked fine.
