Download scan failure

Ask Avast Support something like this:

I have a Windows 11 PC that was previously managed by a company domain. I had Avast Premium installed. All downloads in both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome failed with “Virus scan failed.”

I completely removed Avast using the official Avast uninstall tool. After restart, Microsoft Defender became active and downloads worked normally.

I then performed a clean reinstall of Avast Premium from the official Avast website. Immediately after reinstalling Avast, the “Virus scan failed” problem returned in both Edge and Chrome.

I also tested disabling Avast protection temporarily; when Avast is disabled and Defender is active, downloads work.

Can you confirm whether this is a known Avast compatibility issue with Windows 11, browser download scanning, or remnants of enterprise/domain security policies? What specific Avast component or setting should I change to prevent this without disabling antivirus protection?

Please also tell me whether you recommend a specific cleanup tool, log collection, or version/build of Avast to install.

Also give them these details if they ask:

  • Windows 11

  • Avast Premium Security

  • both Edge and Chrome affected

  • clean uninstall + clean reinstall already tested

  • Defender alone works

  • Avast active = downloads fail

The key question is: “Which Avast component is causing browser downloads to fail with ‘Virus scan failed’, and how can I fix it without disabling protection?”

First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.
Why the first sentence “Ask Avast Support something like this:” who suggested this ?

I’m unsure where this quoted text is from - I don’t know if the fact £it is/was managed by a company domain would have an impact

Do you have a detailed error message/number given when this occurs ?

How are these downloads being downloaded, e.g. directly from a website or via another app ?
A VPN for example.

Ordinarily you wouldn’t see anything the file would be downloaded/scanned and saved to your hard drive.
