I am using the latest beta version of avast home edition (v4.5) and I was wondering if there was a function within the resident shield for scanning downloads before they are opened. If so, where can I find it?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This applies to both 4.1 and 4.5 versions.
The easiest way to do this is move the Sensitivity slider of the On-Access Scanner to High.
More methods (with finer tuning) can be also used - please use the forum Search feature.

If you’re not using a download manager, follow exactly what Vlk said.
If you have one, you can add a link to C:\Program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe (generally without any other parameter).
