DOWNLOADING AVAST HOME

I am trying to download avast home ecition. I have dial up connection. it downloads so far, then I get an error messags saying an error 1006 has occured. last performed operation was opening the self extract archive. try to download again after clearing the cache. I’ve done this several times and can not get the complete download. any suggections?
Thank you for your help.

Why don’t you use a download manager in your computer?
Seems a must have for dial-up users.
You can test http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ or FlashGet.

Or Orbit Download Manager.
I’m translator from english to my language

Are you trying to download and install in one attempt (?), rather than save the file to a location on your hard disk first and then terminate your internet connection and install avast.

You should use the Save As or Save File AS depending on your browser so the file is completely downloaded before there is any installation (initiated by you), which would appear to be what is going on when “opening the self extract archive.”

David is 100% correct. Selecting install instead of download is never a good idea.

For a download manager, I’d like to suggest Giggaget  Free

THANK YOU SO MUCH TECH AND THE REST OF YOU . I never heard of a download manager. What a help you all were. From now on I will save rather than run right away. Your advice was PURR~FECT and PRICELESS. Catsylvania

Did you install any of them?
Does avast download work after that?

Did you install any of them? Does avast download work after that?

I installed freedownloadmanager.
It worked and i have avast downloaded.
Will all my downloads come throught the freedownload program now?

:o
Take care with download managers! Many are considered malwares! I use one which i’s considered clean that I bought the license and it’s very fast with a great support. The Internet Download Manager at www.internetdownloadmanager.com. Best Regards.
???

Glad we could help, welcome to the forums.

@ carioca
I’m sure Tech wouldn’t suggest a download manager ro other application for that matter that was anything other than above board.

David, just used the link that Tech provided and it had a RED McAfee Site Advisor warning. I don’t download anything on a page with the red warning.

Some other scanners do the same (like K9).
Maybe because there is a file sharing there in the website, with non-legit programs being shared.
The program itself is clean.

Well here’s the strange thing if you do a manual check at siteadvisor it is Green, http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/internetdownloadmanager.com

Not if you use the address supplied by Tech:
http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ this one comes up red but, NOT for the program download.

The program itself is perfectly safe.

Tech, I have slow dial up would this be a better download manager than the one that is built into Firefox?
Thanks

Ah, didn’t scroll up far enough, used the link carioca posted, though as you state there is no flag on the actual program.

I have dial-up and usually use the firefox download function for smaller downloads, which is quite good, but it doesn’t provide the same flexibility in being able to resume nor spread the download over more connections (in theory making for a faster download). For larger downloads I use Star Downloader, linked to firefox using the FlashGot interface.

David, hope this isn’t a dumb question but can you explain to me the FlashGot interface. Thanks

Flashgot is an extension for firefox and allows for selecting all download links on a page of an individual link using right-click context menu and can be used with a number of different downloaders.
