Downloading email

Hello, recently Avast shows the little icon in my system tray is checking email but I don’t even have Thunderbird open and messages do come in. Is this something with Avast or is it Thunderibird or can someone tell me what is going on? I would appreciate input on this. Thanks, Ilene

avast doesn’t know or care what your email program is, it monitors ports 25, 110, 119, 143, so if there is traffic on those ports avast will scan it and you will see the email icon.

So do you use a P2P application, if so what one ?
Some of them communicate using standard email ports and this could be one reason.

The other reason could be you have an undetected/hidden trojan spambot sending spam. Set the Internet Mail provider to High sensitivity as that can then detect multiple identical emails in a period of time, but that just makes you aware of the undetected spambot. The alert however, may give the file name/process responsible for sending the email.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).
