I have downloaded the new version of Avast Home Free showing as version 4.6.691 from Major Geeks, but when I check the properties of the
program it still shows as version 4.6.665.
I have uninstalled the program several times now and reinstalled it with the same result
Could you please tell me what I should do, and where I can get the new version 4.6.691 that actually is this version.
Also do I have to uninstall the old version or can I install over the old one. This is the first time this kind of problem has happened to me with a download in about 3-4 years. I’m totally at a loss why this is happening, and I would really appreciate some help as this is driving me to distraction.
@ FIXER
Downloaded from the link you gave and (actually tried both ways link and program update)
ashAvast.exe properties still gives me v. 4.6.665.0, but if I go into ‘Avast version 4.6 Home Edition’ ‘About Avast’ the Build shows as
Build: Jul2005 (4.6.691). So does this now mean I have the latest version? Found this somewhat confusing,
as I thought the version would be in the .exe. Any comments on this.
@ calcu007
That may be with Avast, but other programs I have I can get the version by checking the .exe, like Spywareblaster it’s 3.4 and the .exe says version 3.4.
It’s helpful to know though where to look in Avast where you can find the version.
Maybe because avast! has incremental updates, the version is shown correctly on the new files but not the old ones, that were not changed by the upgrade.
Maybe if you install avast! completely from the setup.exe file it will be different. I think not either. The different versions indicate the last updated version of that specific file.
To see the antivirus version, check the About dialog 8)
First avast! has many .exe files for the different components and as a whole they make up version 4.6.691.
I have many .exe files that also show 4.6.665 (in file properties) but that doesn’t mean too much as not every element of avast changes when minor updates are made.
It is also possible that the file could have been edited/updated but the comments/remarks about the file have not been updated.
If the about avast is showing the correct version as 4.6.691 then that is what you have, the Windows Security Center should also recognise it as 4.6.691 otherwise it may report it as being out of date. You have nothing to worry about.
There are occasions when things seem out of synch (the avast repair usually resolves this), but this doesn’t to be the case rather where you are trying to identify what version you have.
Agree and understand what both of you Tech and DavidR are saying. As far as I’m concerned I am now sure I have the latest version 6.6.691. So from now on I will check the ‘About’ dialogue in Avast Home. Also know I have nothing to worry about with you guys here. 8)
