My wife just purchased Dragon Naturally Speaking and upon autorun of the DVD, AVAST found a trojan. It stated that the setup file was a win32.Trojan-gen. Could it be that it is falsely detecting a Trojan? I am inclined to think so, but I don’t want to infect my system.
Please advise. I wanted to ask Nuance, but I figured since AVAST found the Trojan, I should ask here first.
The avast Win32:Trojan-gen is generic signature (the -gen at the end of the malware name), so that is trying to catch multiple variants of the same type of malware and is a fine balance between detecting a new variant and detecting something valid as infected.
So setup file do on occasion get detected because of what they can do, most certainly report this as a possible false positive.
Well, I just got around to messing with the dvd again. This time, I tried to install it on the desktop just to see if it would trigger a response from the anti-virus. It did not. So the disk is probably okay. I am going to update the laptop again and try to install it. The desktop is at work and has an enterprise anti-virus that is kept up to date. I guess the laptop wasn’t updated like I thought. I will post my findings.
Are you using avast in the laptop (it’s not so clear now)? If so, how is it set to update? Automatically?
Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
Yes, the laptop is set to update automatically and it did work ;D. I guess I will have to recheck the settings, but it did update as soon as I turned on the laptop and finished booting into windows. My wife is currently using the laptop, but I will get around to posting the log.
