DreamSpark, Avast Home Free, and Windows Server Editions.

Ok ive noticed that Avast home free refuses to install on NT Server OS’es on the assumption that they would only be used for corporate interests. However, with the release of dreamspark, windows server 2k3 is availabe to anyone who can prove their academic status to Microsoft. I, for example, use the web server functionality to test server-side scripting languages(php, asp, etc.)

Now, is their any possiblity that a free edition wil become available that installs on windows server editions?

I think the reason avast! Home won’t install on Windows Server has little to do with “corporate interests” and much more to do (along with nearly every AV for your “average” PC) with its inability to function under Server’s architecture. E.g. multi-user simultaneous logins, roaming profile…

I can’t speak for Alwil, but I think they won’t allow it. Besides the OS, most probably, the academic purposes won’t be Home use as they claim to the free version use.

the dreamspark program is academically oriented, yes, but schools arent allowed to get it…basically if u can prove that you are a student, you can join the program. while one could use the software for school work, it is still licensed for one’s personal use, not for the school to be installing on their computers. Of course if alwil has already made up its mind about this ill just look elsewhere. i have enjoyed great performance from avast on my desktop computer(running windows xp). it is good at catching things that other anti-virus never seem to pick up. i don’t really need the protection offered by editions higher than free…im not exactly running around advertising my server to hackers
